A problem with the signalling on Island Line has resulted in a suspension of train services between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin this morning (Sunday).
The issue means it is unsafe for trains to operate and therefore services running up and down the East Wight have been cancelled.
Response staff have been informed and more information will be provided by South Western Railway when known.
It is currently estimated that disruption will continue until 10:00.
Tickets are currently being accepted on Southern Vectis Routes 2 and 3 between Ryde and Shanklin.
UPDATE @ 08:01 – The problem has been resolved and all lines have reopened

It isn’t unsafe – all they have to do is have one train running between ryde and shanklin – you don’t need signals for one train on one single track.-They are full of it.
You know f##k all about signalling you sad little Twat so engage your brain before commenting
happy – you do realise that when you resort to insulting someone like that, it invalidates your argument and awards credence to the other person.
as islander said – one track, one train – no need for signals, nothing else uses the line. If there is an issue, then the person noting it can use a mobile phone
Two batter powered shuttle buses with electronic warnings when nearing each other would be cheaper, could be driven by more people ex bus drivers etc, no NEED for high voltage dangerous tracks, which have to be fenced to prevent idiots and animals from dying, is the way to go.
Tar mac the entire stretch and lets have more flexible buses.
Then walkers, cyclists and horse riders could use the track too in safety as they do ever busier roads now, knowing that only a couple of buses are to be sharing the roadway.
island line staff are just a bunch of saddo’s that don’t do their jobs for every little reason. They need sacking, the lot of them and the train replaced with a shuttle bus on tarmac
In that case, lets close all the roads too as they are too busy and dangerous then walkers, cyclists and horse riders could use the roads safely.
The ORR have stated the railway is 2500 times safer than roads, and the UK has one of the safest railways in the world, yet some of the most dangerous roads!
I wish someone would tarmac over you. Go back to your sad little life of trolling and being a keyboard warrior. Railways have been around before you was born, and will still be here when you are no longer
Gibion cages for the road surface would be great
Remind me how you stop said train if there’s someone on the line ahead or a vehicle has hit a bridge or there’s a lineside fire…. need I go on? Your simplistic view on life is significantly inaccurate. I’m confident your reply will be “I’m sure the driver can just stop the train”
the driver of the train sees the issue up ahead and stops – as was the case years ago.
Times change…
Playing devil’s advocate I would suggest that adopting the standard “signal on danger” procedure for all signals on the line and contacting the signalman before passing them no matter what their state would keep the trains running safely. Given that most signals on our line control station approaches and exits this wouldn’t even cause much of a delay.
Unfortunately the regulations are written with much busier lines in mind and (quite rightly) put safety above all else so there is no leeway to adopt a pragmatic approach like this.
I would, however, be interested to know exactly how a signal failure could occur on a line that has just undergone a very extensive major overhaul.
Hopefully it wasn’t cable theft again.
What a great impression for visitors.
“Signalling system” refers to things including: train detection, TPWS, AWS, GSM-R, crossing comms, points failures and indications, line side signals, CCF control systems, interlocking etc…
The Infrastructure Managers get heavily fined for cancelling trains, so they don’t close the line for fun!
Have a look at the RSSB RT8000 rule book before making any more ill informed comments please.
Alright spotter – calm down
I work for the railway, so have a professional interest. You’re the one taking a keen interest spotter!
Lol. Too many Hw
Nobody cares as nobody uses it
Apart from the 1.34 million that used it in the past 12 months.
But who’s to say that it wasn’t just 1 greedy rich person buying 1.34 million tickets?
An awful lot of holiday makers do and guess what??? It’s hoilday season.
Are they still using levers and wires?
More hysteria, NO TRAINS!! 8.01am trains running……
Why did SW Railway bother refurbing those trains, they hardly ever run a proper service
