Torrential downpours overnight have led to severe flooding in Binstead with homes now underwater and vehicles stranded.
Residents in Arnold Road, Cemetery Road and Binstead Hill have once again been hit by a sudden flood which has submerged a number of properties.
At nearby Binstead Lodge Road, a car has become stranded in the middle of deep flood water as Dame Anthony’s Brook has burst its banks. Thankfully, the driver has escaped the vehicle uninjured.
The main Newport to Ryde road is also flooded near the Binstead Arms and at Ryde Golf Club – the latter of which has seen a car fall victim to the flood.
The area is prone to flooding which has prompted investigation work by the Environment Agency, the Isle of Wight Council and Southern Water – but any future action has come too late for locals who now face another clean up operation.
Although rain was expected last night and this morning, no one was prepared for an early hours wake up with flood water gushing in. Further rainfall is expected, which could lead to further flooding as day breaks.
Elsewhere on the Island, flooding is being reported at Fairlee Road in Newport, Newport Road in Lake (outside airport) and Avenue Road in Sandown.
Park Road in Wootton and Briddlesford Road, Downend are said to be impassable, with Main Street in Arreton and Sandford Road, Whiteley Bank also underwater.
The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for Monktonmead Brook and the St John’s area in Ryde as river levels rise. Island Line trains have been suspended due to flooding at the Ryde St John’s station.
UPDATE @ 12:21 – Flooding has receded in the Binstead area, however, a number of homes have been damaged by the floods.

Why don’t we just solve the problem by building more houses and putting more concrete on the ground
What a jolly good idea (not)
How about actually resting a Field after ploughing it?
We could also grub up orchards, and hedgerows and leave ditches untended to create more space for building and more ‘brown field sites’
What should happen when we get these sort of Amber weather warnings is have a responsive team who go to the most flood prone areas and make sure the drains are clear.
Novel idea but we need people that understand what you are saying. Its a case of they think they know better but really we know better
The drains aren’t the problem, where do you think the water goes once it’s in the drains
IOW council were meant to be addressing this, as usual nothing has been done in years. Absolutely unacceptable!!
I hope everyone with outdoor animals got them indoors
Bob Seely should have rolled out our free water-buts to catch the rain water, obviously it would have prevented this lol
What ever did happen to the free water butts? We never got ours neither did our neighbours.
It appears nobody has got them….
