Island MP Bob Seely has said ‘we will deliver more NHS dental capacity on the Island’ after details of the Government’s NHS dentistry recovery plan were announced. During his appearance in Westminster on Wednesday (7th February), MP Seely asked Health Minister Victoria Atkins about when the Island would see improvements in the standard of dentistry. In reply, she said:
“We are very clear on the immediate-term benefits; we want to get them out as quickly as possible”.
As part of the recovery plans, there will be higher standard payments for every patient treated, plus extra for seeing new patients, and higher payments for those needing complex work. It is also hoped that dental teams will visit schools across the Island. Measures that have already been agreed on to tackle the Island’s dental crisis include; temporary payments to Island NHS dental practices to increase treatments, recommissioning of contracts for NHS dentists on the island to increase NHS capacity and from next month, a mobile dental unit visiting the island to treat urgent cases. Practices on Gray’s Walk in Newport, Cross Street in Ryde and High Street in Wootton all announced they were to scrap NHS patients within the last 3 months. On the news, Island MP Bob Seely has said:
“I know that folks have been waiting for an NHS dentist and dozens of people have contacted me about it. I will be emailing them very soon with an update. “Next week I will be contacting the NHS board that distributes funds to make sure the island receives its fair share. I’ll also ask for an update on their current plans to increase NHS capacity. “We will deliver more NHS dental capacity on the Island.”

What planet are you from? Typical conservative attempt to deflect the blame for the mess that they have got the NHS (including dentistry) in to by continually cutting budgets. No one (other than gullible conservatives) is going to fall for the sudden change when a general election is imminent.
Once again you ignore the statistics which show that young people are involved in more accidents than the elderly. Penalty points and disqualification are slightly different for novice drivers, in acknowledgement of the increased risk they face on the roads. Despite the Govt saying this, since 2016, (what happened that year?) 10,000 dentists and dental clinical staff of EU origin have left the UK. This number has not been re-recruited since. On top of this, despite £3billion alleged investment, there has actually been half a billion £ cut to dental funding. Combine this with extortionate tuition fees and high student loan repayments, who is going to train to fill these posts?
The NHS has said that basically NHS dentistry has all but gone in the UK as a result.
Regardless of Bobs press releases and photo opportunities, he also voted down a proposal to improve child dentistry. Does he care about you? Nope, of course not. He’s gone private.

It’s, basically, a £20k “golden hello” for new NHS dentists.
The trouble is it’s spread over three years and doesn’t address the core problem that it the unit based scheme that is used to calculate how much dentists get for NHS work and the fact that the actual amount they get per unit has fallen massively in real terms over the last 13 years.
The bottom line is that even the most altruistic dentists cannot afford to work for the NHS.

You’re absolutely right. I was talking to a member of staff at my local dentist and they were saying that the Dentist actually had to work for free on some patients to achieve the Government’s goals! What crazy scheme is that? Who is going to work for free?
The amount that the NHS pays dentists does not cover the cost of the materials in many cases these days due to inflation. They also get paid the same amount irrespective of the amount of work done at one appointment, which can leave them considerably out of pocket. Obviously, very few dentists are prepared to do NHS work because this idiot Tory government does not pay them enough for their services.
That’s the unit based system. Fillings are 3 units. They get 3 units whether they do one filling or 10 per patient.
And, very obviously, any dentists who take up NHS work are going to face a lot of patients needing a lot of work.
£20,000 over 3yrs, probably taxed at 40% sounds good to Jo public but to a dental practice it’s peanut’s. If I was making double private with far less process and paperwork etc why would they go backwards getting less ?. Agreed need dentist but without competition to bring prices down then they will stay private
