A pedestrian has been badly injured after being struck by a car travelling the wrong way down Sandown High Street – in what is a hit-and-run collision.
It shortly before 22:40 that emergency services were called to the scene on High Street, directly outside the Co-op convenience store.
A male pedestrian – holidaying on the Isle of Wight – was crossing the road with his partner when the vehicle suddenly emerged from behind them.
Island Echo understands the car appeared from
York Road, turned left into High Street and then proceeded to drive the wrong way down the road before striking the male.
The vehicle did not stop at the scene, with the driver continuing the wrong way down the High Street.
Police are understood to have made a swift arrest on nearby Albert Road, detaining a woman on suspicion of serious driving offences.
High Street has been closed to all traffic between Albert Road and York Road. Motorists are being diverted locally.
UPDATE @ 23:48 – Thankfully, the pedestrian’s injuries are not deemed life-changing.
Following the update from doctors, Police have now reopened High Street to all traffic.
The vehicle involved, a Mazda 3, has been seized.
Further information is expected on Sunday morning.
