A 32-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a pedestrian was hit in Sandown late last night (Saturday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services were called to High Street at just gone 22:30 when a car collided with a pedestrian, and then drove off.
It’s understood the vehicle emerged from York Road and took a left turn, travelling the wrong way down the High Street. Just moments later, the vehicle is alleged to have hit the pedestrian – a man in his 50s.
The casualty, a holidaymaker who had enjoyed an evening at Sandown Pier with his partner, was conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital with suspected serious injuries. It has now been confirmed by medics that he has escaped with minor injuries.
The driver of the vehicle involved, who continued driving the wrong way down the one-way street, has been arrested.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 32-year-old woman from Sandown was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when the alcohol level was above the prescribed limit and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
She was stopped on nearby Albert Road, with her vehicle – a Mazda 3 – seized.
The woman remains in custody while enquiries continue.
