The Isle of Wight Hockey Club enjoyed a mixed but encouraging opening weekend, with both men’s sides beginning the new season with victories.
LADIES BATTLE HARD IN NARROW DEFEAT
The Ladies’ 1XI suffered a narrow defeat at home to Winchester 2XI in a closely fought contest.
The visitors scored the only goal of the game from a short corner in the first half, while the Islanders battled hard and created opportunities of their own without being able to convert their set pieces.
The game was disrupted by injuries, with Polly Rider suffering a facial injury and Lizzie Dodds picking up a knee injury. The club wishes both players a speedy recovery.
There was a positive return for Georgia Whittle, who stepped back onto the pitch for the first time in 5 months following the birth of her daughter.
Called into action earlier than planned, Whittle produced a composed performance in midfield and was named Wightlink Player of the Match.

SIX OF THE BEST FOR NEWLY PROMOTED MEN
The newly promoted Isle of Wight Men’s 1XI made an impressive return to Division 1 with a convincing victory over Petersfield at the refurbished Smallbrook Stadium.
The Islanders dominated possession and territory from the outset, eventually breaking the deadlock through Adam, who produced an excellent reverse-stick finish into the top corner.
A strong defensive display, led by Wightlink Player of the Match Ethan, ensured Petersfield struggled to create clear opportunities.
The Islanders stepped up the pressure after the interval, with further goals from Adam, Kit and captain Joe, before Alex added another with a diving finish.
Ethan completed the scoring following a short corner to cap an excellent individual display.
The youngsters in the squad, including Kit, Cian, Seb and Finn, all impressed, with Cian particularly effective after moving into a new right-back role. Oscar also made a welcome return to the squad.
The result gives the Islanders an ideal start to life in Division 1, with the side currently joint-top alongside Trojans ahead of their next fixture.

DEVELOPING LADIES’ SIDE SHOW PROMISE AT WINCHESTER
The Ladies’ 2XI travelled to Winchester for their opening fixture, with several players experiencing their first competitive game for the club.
Winchester started strongly and established a 4-1 half-time lead, but the Islanders showed plenty of determination and created some good attacking opportunities, particularly down the left through Klara and Lucy.
The Islanders’ reward came from Meg, who finished a well-worked short-corner routine following a clever pass from Jazz.
Winchester continued to apply pressure after the break, adding 5 further goals.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives for the developing squad, with Klara named Wightlink Player of the Match.

COMEBACK VICTORY FOR MEN’S 2XI
The Men’s 2XI began their campaign with an impressive comeback victory away to Trojans 5XI.
The Islanders fell behind early but quickly restored parity through captain Carl Joyce, who finished into the far corner following a short corner.
Trojans regained the lead before half-time, despite the Islanders creating further chances.
The visitors returned after the interval with renewed composure. Thomas Young reacted quickest to a loose ball to volley home and make it 2-2.
With the game finely balanced, Rupert King proved decisive, calmly finishing from a short-corner routine to complete the comeback.
The Islanders then held firm under late pressure, with goalkeeper Nate Bower making sure of the 3 points, including a crucial save from a final Trojans short corner.
Rupert King was named Wightlink Player of the Match after an energetic performance down the right flank, capped by the winning goal.
It was a particularly satisfying victory for the Islanders, who had endured a difficult record against Trojans away from home in recent seasons.
