A supermarket giant on the Isle of Wight will not be allowed to continue round-the-clock deliveries to its Newport hub.
It’s after nearby residents slammed Sainsbury’s, on Foxes Road, for being an ‘awful neighbour’.
They said it restricted their quality of life as large lorries waited for hours outside their properties with the engines on.
During the COVID-19 pandemic and then for a 12-month trial run, the supermarket was allowed to have lorries deliver goods 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It was seeking permission to make the delivery hours permanent, so items could be restocked overnight.
Rejecting the application, the Isle of Wight Council said any permanent change would result in a noise disturbance to local residents, having a serious and adverse effect on their health and quality of life. The council decided the original delivery hours would not prevent stock being replenished.
Hours of delivery will now be between 05:30 and 23:30, Mondays to Saturdays, and 08:00 to 23:00 on Sundays or Bank Holidays. Alder King Planning Consultants, on behalf of the supermarket giant, said the council had not received any complaints relating to the overnight deliveries.
A number of neighbours objected to the supermarket’s application.
A resident who has lived across from it for ten years said the deliveries had been a constant annoyance with “massive lorries running at all times of the day and night”.
They said:
“Sainsbury’s are awful neighbours, despite their community-centred advertising and should be kept on a tight leash for the sake of the health and wellbeing of the local residents.”
Another said the store had no respect for people living nearby. They claimed they had tried to raise complaints in person, over the phone and via email, but with no answer.
One person said:
“It is not easy to get the peace and quiet we all need when living next to a major supermarket, so to have noise outside of opening hours is both distressing and unnecessary.”
Isle of Wight Council planning officers acknowledged there may be slight economic benefit in allowing 24-hour deliveries, but added that it must be balanced against the impact on residents, including the over 55s development opposite the loading bay.
The environmental health department confirmed it had had no complaints about the deliveries, but that did not mean the night-time deliveries were acceptable.
Sainsbury’s has been approached for comment.

Understand some of the reasoning, but if no complaints had been lodged with the Council prior, why not?
Also, WHO in Planning sanctioned to over 55’s development opposite the loading bay?!
I don’t get the connection about the over 55’s development opposite the loading bay ?
Could you please explain ?
If you live near trains ( Used to live so close to train track when went past things would rattle and TV signal lost) or airport /ferries etc you get used to it and causes no problems. The locals will soon complain when they walk over in morning and find no milk.!.
I’ve lived next to both, living next to a busy road is far worse than trains. And it stinks
Smokey joe likes toes
Well the council doing something for the people that put them in office
But 6 hrs isn’t very good as we are told by experts that we all should be sleeping 8 to 9 hrs a day.
Pops u still on the pot
Yet more large lorries on Island roads at busy times. It’s obvious to restock overnight. I think Sainsburys were here before a lot of those houses were built so why did the council grant planning permission for them? Double or triple glazing would keep a lot of the noise at bay.
Agree, and this reflects on the house prices…..Location, location, location.
You think homes shouldn’t be near shops? Not all of us want to drive into town because we need some milk.
In all fairness, Sainsbury’s were modestly sized at the time before the large development around it got planning permission. At the time, suddenly many lines in the supermarket were withdrawn, and if customers asked for the missing items, the reply was that the premises were too small… (They hadn’t been too small beforehand!) Nowadays, there seems to be enough space in Sainsbury’s to also accommodate Argos, Habitat and the soon closing Lloyds Pharmacy, all of which will need additional deliveries in their own vehicles. And why is the loading bay directly positioned opposite residential buildings? If the planning department had been a little more alert, this could have been prevented.
The develpoers should have taken note of the loading bay before they built there.
Just shut the supermarket down simple Kev where is Bev
I’m more of a ‘Nisa’ sort of shopper
Who cares sainsburys are really bad
Tesco cheaper better and friendlier
All you do Kev is write a load of nonsense on most pages
You must have a very sad life
Ur such a fool kev where is bev
If you don’t like it should not have moved close to it ,,,,,
Sainsburys were there there 1st ….
Blame the planning committee for allowing building Flat’s/ House’s on the land !!!!
Then realise that shop’s need stock and for that lorries!!!!!
How many of those old people complaining are regular shoppers at Sainsbury’s?
I think we all know the answer, regular problem with old people over 55 double standards..
Would you like it outside your property – you’ll be old one day
The shop was there first Pratt
You’re a nasty piece of work aren’t you – one of life’s social media trolls no doubt
If you chose to live opposite a large supermarket, and I’m guessing that many if not all of the residents opposite the loading bay area made a choice to live there, then it’s a bit difficult to complain about what goes on there as far as loading and unloading goes. For goodness sake, most of those apartments actually have balconies where the residents can sit and watch the loading bay, and that is literally their only view.
Didn’t any of those people buying the apartments not notice the big supermarket thing just across the road? Did they not wonder what might actually happen around a loading bay area of a supermarket? And yet they still bought the apartment but now want to complain because deliveries are being made there?
Agree, you get what you pay for….Spend another 100k for the exact same property and you will have a sea view.
Has Kevin gone to devon
Devon and he now he not coming back
The original planning conditions for this store and other supermarkets in Newport was for no deliveries at night. Once the stores get built then they have all seeked to get this planning condition overturned. So perhaps other commenters might like to take note before having a go at residents living nearby.
A lot of housing nearby was built after sainsburys !!!!!
So they had the choice 2 buy or not 2 buy !!!!!!
Bet they were more than happy during the pandemic….
First to buy up all the loo rolls …..
And the pasta and rice ……
A shop has to have deliveries to operate. Residents must not be disturbed 24 hrs a day and must be able to have a quality of life which includes sleep.
Solution, don’t build supermarkets near residential properties OR don’t build residential properties right next to supermarkets!
Sainsbury to be fair was built many years before the over 55 apartments were built. So, it’s down to the Planning Department at the IOW Council who are at fault surely. They must have known problems with noise would happen? Have to reach a happy medium
Usual island nimby brigade. What is so special about over 55’s anyway? If anything they are over the hill with knackered hearing and eye sight so wont be able to see or hear the deliveries.
My original point exactly, i mean, they don’t have to get up for work etc….
Who cares about Sainsbury’s all bunch of fools in there and I work there
Maybe you did work there arcus
I like chooo chooo trains
The council did nothing about the noise of a lorry park at merston, the licence was gained using false information and even then they constantly broke the terms of the licence, supposed to be farm use only and no cleaning equipment but used as freelance park for all comers and constant cleaning
Wish you would all stop moaning you bought it your bloody lucky to have a place to live….Think of Turkey they are not complaining of there plight
