An Isle of Wight councillor of nearly 25 years standing is defending his Ryde West seat against the Tories, Greens and Reform UK.
Carol Brown (Local Conservatives), Ethan Luke Mackay Cass (The Green Party) and Owen Potter (Reform UK) are contesting Ian Rodney Stephens’s (Island Independent Network) ward at the May 7 local elections.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) contacted candidates for 100 word pitches and photos, either directly or through parties or groups.
Here’s what they had to say, in no particular order…
Carol Brown
I moved to our wonderful Island 20 years ago from Gibraltar. I worked on the Rock in financial services and my late husband and I also ran a small business, a local shop that served the Upper Rock residents.
Since coming to live on the Isle of Wight I have been treasurer of the Conservative Ladies Lunch Club for 17 years.
Over the years our club has raised considerable funds for the Conservative Party and for many local charities.
I am also an enthusiastic volunteer in the Box Office at Shanklin Theatre, where I have worked for the past 14 years and seen the theatre go from strength to strength.
Ethan Luke Mackay Cass
I am 21 years old and have lived in Ryde all my life. In my day job, I work as a horticulturist in commercial glasshouses on the Island. I am keen to improve access to nature for all residents on the Isle of Wight, to improve food security, and self-reliance. I am an active advocate for sustainable urban development.
Owen Potter
I have lived in Ryde all my life, with 33 years in the Swanmore area.
I am proud to stand as a candidate for Ryde West in this May’s local elections, driven by a deep commitment to serving our community and creating meaningful, lasting change.
As a resident who understands the everyday challenges and opportunities we face, l am passionate about building a stronger, more inclusive future for everyone.
My background has given me valuable experience in problem-solving,
collaboration, and leadership. I believe in listening first – because the best solutions come from understanding the real concerns of the people I aim to represent.
Ian Rodney Stephens (incumbent ward councillor)
I am proud to serve the people of Ryde West and the Isle of Wight, working hard every day to make our community a better place for everyone.
I care deeply about our families, neighbours, and local services, and I will always put people before politics.
Whether it’s supporting local businesses, protecting vital services, or helping young people thrive, my focus is on kindness, fairness, confidentiality and practical action.
Living locally means I see the issues that matter most—and I act on them. I’ll keep listening, helping, and standing up for you and your family.
