A men’s team from Ryde Golf Club is to travel to Spain next month to compete in the final stages of the Kyocera UK Golf Club Classic 2023. The event, dubbed by the team as the ‘pinnacle’ of club golf in the country, is to be held in Southern Spain next month on a course designed by 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus and will see the team of Islanders take to the 18-hole course hoping to come home with the trophy. The team made up of captain Paul Moreton, Darren Thompson, Lee Cawley, men’s club captain Steve Tutt, Tom McInnes, Richie Harrison, Aidie Adams, Richard Bond and Callum McInnes who was team captain when the team qualified in October, navigated a total of 7 qualifying rounds – 3 at home and 4 away – to get to this stage. Along the way, having beaten teams from Torquay and Eltham Warren among many others, team captain Paul Moreton has prevailed in not 1 but 2 playoff holes. Though 8 were part of the team throughout the qualifying rounds, only 6 of the team, 5 players and 1 in reserve, will be heading to Spain. A total of 500 teams entered the 1st round of the competition. The cohort from the Binstead Road-based club will be taking on Drax Golf Club from North Yorkshire, Woburn Golf Club from Buckinghamshire and Foxhills from Surrey. In preparation for the tournament, the team picked up new team shirts sponsored by the Electric Center, Ryde last week. Ben Harding, business manager of Electric Center Ryde, has said:
“We like to do a lot for the community and so when it came to it, it was an easy decision to sponsor the team. I wish the guys all the best.”

“Thanks so much to everyone who has supported us to far, from the club itself to the individual sponsors and businesses too. A special thanks to those who are going to make the trip off their own back to support us. We really appreciate it.”
Steve and co head to Barceló Montecastillo Golf Resort in Jerez, Spain on 4th March.
