Sandown & District Historical Association, working with Shanklin Voluntary Youth and Community Centre, has launched the first cut of a new ‘Growing Up In The Bay’ film, highlighting the link between the Monarchy and the Isle of Wight. Narrated by local students Imogen and Neve Miller, who received certificates from High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight Dawn Haig-Thomas and Sandown Mayor Alex Lightfoot, the film guides viewers through events such as the late Queen’s visit to Sandown and Shanklin in 1965, recent visits of Prince Edward, and King Charles, when Prince, on his trip to Newport, with interviews by Islanders involved at the time. Mrs Haig Thomas said:
“What a great film and piece of history! Congratulations to all involved in the making of it. I loved every minute of it.”
Councillor Lightfoot added:
“A fascinating look back through history, Immy and Neve were both fantastic. It was good to see former Mayors from Sandown and Shanklin, and representatives of community organisations at the screening.”
The film is available for 1 month at https://youtu.be/iKawWDQhrss, and there will be further cuts with new stories and memories being discovered at the premiere. You can also watch it below… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKawWDQhrss Alex concluded, by saying:
“Sandown, and the Bay, has a rich and diverse heritage, and the film gives a flavour of part of that history, and those at the launch are looking forward to future Historical Association Projects, and films that capture the community spirit of the Town.”

I’m so great full God chose this family to be our rulers. Imagine if God picked an immigrant family or a poor family. Ew.
The High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight is a pointless, unelected, and antiquated position. We do not need this patronising nonsense. Get rid of it.
