Plans to transform the run down Royal York Hotel in Ryde into a 30-bedroom hotel and four flats have been approved by the Isle of Wight Council Planning Department.
Residents of the seaside town have been calling for work to be undertaken on the once luxurious building in George Street for a number of years, with many calling it an eye sore of the town, however the planning decision now means that the art deco hotel will once again open its doors as a central hotel with the addition of 4 residential flats.
Within the next year the demolition of the single storey link to the adjoining property ‘Hanover House’; removal of existing fire escapes, landings and walkways to hotel; internal and external alterations with associated parking and external alterations to Hanover House will all get underway.
15 conditions have been placed on the planning permission by Council officers, many of which are a list of tasks to complete before certain work is begun. A condition imposed under Section 91 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and to ensure the development commences in a timely manner for the protection of the Listed Building, is that work must begin by 3rd April 2015.
The Royal York Hotel is owned by the company behind The Grand, Sandown and Sandringham hotels in Sandown and The Albion Hotel, Freshwater Bay.
