UPDATED MONDAY: Police have this evening (Sunday) closed a road in Freshwater after a van collided with a pedestrian, Island Echo understands.
Emergency services including Police, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics have attended the scene on Camp Road, where it is understood a small white van has collided with a pedestrian.
The incident is understood to have occurred around 20:00.
Camp Road has been closed from the junction with Queens Road; Stroud Road/Afton Road and also at the junction with Victoria Road. A hard closure has been requested by Hampshire Constabulary, indicating the road is set to be closed for a long period of time.
UPDATED MONDAY @ 09:10 – A 78-year-old male has received life-threatening neck injuries and is to be transferred to Southampton General Hospital following last night’s collision.
The gentleman was first conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, however his condition is said to be so serious that he is being transferred to the mainland hospital.
A 27-year-old male from Totland, the driver of the white van involved, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving without due care and attention and has been bailed until May pending further enquiries.
Camp Road re-opened at around 04:00 this morning after remaining closed for around 8 hours, indicating the serious nature of the incident.
UPDATE @ 13:30 – A spokesperson for St Mary’s Hospital has this afternoon confirmed that the 78-year-old male is now in a stable condition and has remained at the hospital in Newport.
UPDATE TUESDAY: The unnamed 78-year-old patient has been transferred to Southampton General Hospital where he is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
