Details of why a ‘major improvement necessary’ food hygiene rating has been slapped on The George Hotel in Yarmouth have been revealed.
The popular Yarmouth hotspot was inspected by the Isle of Wight Council’s environmental health team back in September, with 8 problems found needing immediate attention.
Inspectors found issues with stock rotation and control, with 2 systems in place instead of 1, and a pack of sausages past its use by date. Also, daily diary sheets had not been completed to monitor temperatures in the past 4 days prior to inspection and there was a lack of allergen information.
The cleanliness of the kitchen was also raised as an issue, with hand contact surfaces, areas of the walk-in chiller, around the waste bin and the underneath of shelves in the kitchen storage unit dirty, with old food debris found in areas.
Other issues identified include:
- Raw chicken being stored next to an open container of lettuce
- Food being stored in containers on the floor of the walk-in chiller
- Hand washing basin unable to be used due to being full of utensils
- No filter in the extraction unit
- Damage evident to the floor
- Seal to the fridges split and requiring replacement
Overall, the hotel scored 50 out of a possible 60, which lead to a 1 out of 5 rating.
The George has not yet issued a statement on the Council’s findings.
What a way to treat paying customers.
They could have made people so ill.
Why have the Environmental Health team not been making more checks for it to be as low as 1 it’s disgusting.
Should be closed down until it rates a 5.

Remind me not to accept your kind invitation to lunch.
An apologist on this platform claimed that the shortfalls would all be in paperwork. Not so, it appears.
Just shows that these days you DON’T get what you pay for.
Vote with your wallet !!!!
Wouldn’t ever go anywhere that has failed the Hygiene rating…..
Salmonella e-coli sorry not paying for that thank you very much!!!!!!
Should be closed until it is 100 per cent and checked weekly to ensure that Hygiene standards don’t slide back to slum standards!!!!!
