A Sandown shoplifter who offended just days after being sentenced for another dishonesty offence has been ordered to pay compensation to a pair of national supermarket chains.
Joann Poll, 46, of Station Avenue in Sandown, admitted 4 counts of theft from a shop when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday).
Prosecuting, Liz Miller, told the court that on the 18th April, Poll – alongside a male – entered Co-op on High Street in Sandown and stole washing liquid, cheese and ham to the value of £35.
A day later she entered Sainsbury’s on Union Street in Ryde and placed 8 steaks in a bag, to the value of £50.25, and left the store without paying.
On the 20th April, Poll went back to Co-op in Sandown and stole alcoholic drinks and burgers to the value of £46.80, before then stealing coffee and energy bars to the value of £6 from the same store a day later on the 21st April.
The court heard how the the offending occurred the day after Poll had been sentenced for another shoplifting offence.
Defending the 46-year-old, Oscar Vincent told the court that the offending was easily detected and that at the time, Poll was going through a period of ongoing upheval.
Magistrates ordered Poll, who was in tears throughout the hearing, to pay compensation of £138.05 to Sainsbury’s and Co-op.

So if caught, she has to pay her shopping bill, if not caught there is no shopping bill that week. There is no deterrent, in fact there is an incentive.
