Classic yachts from across the UK and Channel Islands descended on Cowes last weekend for the 2026 Cowes Spring Classics, with Whooper crowned overall winner after a standout performance on the Solent.
The annual regatta, hosted by Mary Scott-Jackson of MSJ Events and Martin Nott, with racing organised by Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club, once again attracted an impressive fleet of historic and classic yachts for 3 days of competitive sailing and social celebrations.
Taking the prestigious Overall Winner title was Whooper, a 1939 Laurent Giles-designed yacht helmed by Giovanni Belgrano, who also secured victory in Class 1 and the award for Highest Placed British Classic Yacht Club (BCYC) Member.
In Class 1, Scherzo of Cowes, a 1968 Sparkman & Stephens Swan 36 sailed by Peter Morton, finished in 2nd place, while Njord, a 1918 classic 8 Metre First Rule yacht helmed by Jason Fry, claimed 3rd.
Class 2 was dominated by the H G May-designed West Solent One Designs, with Suvretta, built in 1924 and skippered by Will Van Dyke, taking top spot after a strong series performance.
Harlequin, sailed by David Heritage, finished 2nd, while Enchanted, helmed by Claire Locke, secured 3rd place.
The competitive Gaffer fleet in Class 3 was won by Wave, a 1930s Gaff Sloop sailed by Charlie Couture from Guernsey.
Ivy Green, helmed by Richard Jacobs, finished runner-up, with Satellite, sailed by David and Sue Pennison, taking 3rd place overall.
Away from the racing, crews also took part in a packed social programme throughout the weekend.
The award for Best Dressed Crew at the Saturday Dinner was presented to Scherzo of Cowes in recognition of the crew’s efforts during the evening celebrations.
Organisers praised competitors, volunteers and sponsors for helping make the 2026 edition another success.
A spokesperson for the organising team said:
“Cowes Spring Classics continues to showcase the very best of classic yacht racing – combining beautiful boats, competitive sailing and a fantastic social atmosphere both on and off the water.”
Planning is already underway for the 2027 Cowes Spring Classics, which will take place from 21st-23rd May and mark the event’s 10th anniversary.
Organisers say a special programme of racing and celebrations is being planned to commemorate the milestone and celebrate a decade of classic yacht racing in Cowes.
