Coastguard Rescue Officers and firefighters are working to free a young girl trapped in the mud on the banks of the River Medina at Whippingham this afternoon (Monday).
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has a number of resources on scene between The Folly Inn and Island Harbour, with fire crews working alongside colleagues from HM Coastguard.
The alarm was raised around 17:10 with fire crews from Newport – including the water rescue unit – responding to the incident alongside Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team.
Cowes RNLI has also been launched to assist with the operation.
UPDATE @ 17:55 – The cold and wet casualty – confirmed as a 12-year-old girl – has now been freed from her predicament after spending more than an hour trapped waist-deep in the mud.
She has been stretchered to an awaiting ambulance by Coastguards for onward conveyance to St Mary’s Hospital.
Although the lifeboat was not directly involved in the actual rescue, the crew provided useful radio communication between on–shore coastguards and Solent Coastguard at Fareham.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

I agree, wonder who is going to pay for her rescue
Probably not you
She’s a young girl you idiot.
And you sir, have never made an error of judgment in your entire life, have you! She’s 12 years old for goodness sake!
What awfull comments concerning a young 12 year old girl , you both should be ashamed of yourselfs
Why is that then? Kids exploring, better than steeling or worse. Bit of experience for her or her friends that they will never forget, lesson learnt
How wonderful our rescue services are, they deserve our full support. Let’s hope this young girl is recovering & will learn from her experience.
Omg! I hope she’s ok? That must of been terrifyingly for her. X
Up to her waist for an hour? The poor girl must have been terrified. Thankfully she is safe, and hopefully is well.
No doubt some bright spark wil now insist on fencing off the river/sea/oceans.
lost a few wellington boots along there when bait digging. can be very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing
Looking back to when I was kid, the experience itself would have been bad enough, but then there would have been relieved parents, so bloody angry, they might nearly of killed you themselves, then trying to live it down amongst friends with memorys like elephants….. oh the Joy’s of youthful misadventures.
Luckily a good outcome to this one.
