Cross-Solent ferry operator Red Funnel has today opened applications for its 2026 Island Ambassador and Supported Teams programme, an initiative dedicated to supporting the aspirations and talents of individuals and teams living on the Isle of Wight.
Island residents have until midday on Friday 14th November to submit their applications and be in with a chance of receiving travel support from Red Funnel, to help facilitate their talents from local recognition to regional and even national.
The Island Ambassadors and Teams chosen will receive travel support for 12 months, enabling participation in mainland competitions, performances and events throughout 2026.
Both individuals and groups of up to 6 Island residents can apply to become Island Ambassadors, while groups and teams of over 6 can apply for Supported Team status.
In 2025, 16 talented Islanders were selected to become Ambassadors, including Dog Agility partnership and Crufts hopefuls Abs Whittington and her dog Dash, junior archer Summer Chambers on her Olympic pathway training with Team GB, and UK Taekwondo competitor Joe Ramskill – plus many more!
Speaking on her year to date as an Island Ambassador and how this sponsorship has enhanced her competition, Abs Whittington said:
“Red Funnel’s support has been invaluable. As there are no agility competitions on the Island, we have to travel to the mainland to compete, so the travel support has enabled us to access more training and purpose-built venues. We are lucky enough to have some amazing trainers here on the Island, but being able to train with even more has definitely contributed to our competitive success this year. Since receiving support, we have progressed from Grade 1 to Grade 4, competed internationally, and won the Starters Cup Final at London International Horse Show. I’m so glad I applied for the Island Ambassador Scheme, we have been able to achieve things and go places I never thought possible.”
A further 12 ambitious teams were successful in being selected to represent Red Funnel and the Isle of Wight at off-Island competitions, showcasing their talents at a regional and national level. These included the Isle of Wight Underwater Hockey Team, Vectis Equestrian Club and the Isle of Wight Squash Team.
Adam Dominey, captain of the Isle of Wight Squash Team, had this advice for anyone thinking of applying for the programme:
“Playing squash on the Isle of Wight is fantastic, but travelling to the mainland for competitions can be challenging. Thanks to Red Funnel’s sponsorship, our team has been able to attend more events, compete at a higher level, and bring home stronger results. If you’re considering applying, I’d say do it – the support makes a real difference!”
Speaking on the opening of the 2025 application process, Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, added:
“Our Island Ambassador and Supported Teams initiative is a wonderful way to celebrate and champion the incredible talent we have here on the Isle of Wight. Each year, we are inspired by the dedication and ambition of those who apply, and I look forward to seeing our 2026 cohort take their next steps towards regional and national recognition.”
Applications are open to individuals of all ages and talents, starting today, and closing on Friday 14th November. Applicants must live on the Isle of Wight, have already demonstrated a strong commitment to their passion locally, and be ready to take the next step by pursuing opportunities on the mainland.
