The opening of the brand new Premier Inn hotel and Cookhouse & Pub restaurant on Sandown Esplanade has been scheduled for the end of November, it has been announced.
Construction and fit-out of the new 100-bedroom hotel and restaurant is now complete with the building being handed over to Whitbread’s new openings team in the coming weeks.
Recruitment is set to begin in October with staff training undertaken before the doors open to the public for the very first time ahead of the Christmas period. A total of 60 jobs are expected to be created, with an emphasis on employing those from the Sandown area and those out of education, employment or training.
Vacancies will be advertised through the local Job Centre Plus and at www.whitbreadcareers.com in October.
Geoff Cook, Senior Project and Programme Manager, says:
“The task of opening a new Premier Inn hotel and Cookhouse & Pub restaurant is considerable in normal times. Working in a different way under COVID-19 restrictions means the task takes longer as the team work to open the hotel in a socially distanced and safe way. We will also be opening the hotel with Premier Inn’s enhanced hygiene promise, Premier Inn CleanProtect, in place to help guests stay with confidence1.
“Considering these new ways of working, we plan to hold off opening the new Sandown Premier Inn and Cookhouse & Pub until the end of November. The new hotel and restaurant building will be made secure and managed by an on-site security team until then.
“We’re excited to become part of the community and helping to attract visitors to Sandown year-round. Taking a few extra weeks to open the hotel and restaurant carefully and safely is the sensible thing to do”.
It was almost 5 years ago that Island Echo exclusively revealed that the Carlton Hotel would be demolished to make way for Premier Inn’s latest hotel on the Isle of Wight.

A very optimistic prediction, I hope it pays off.
Rather bland looking building !
Better than the site of waste land.
But not better than the previous building that occupied it.
Very ugly building, hope it’s successful because the island needs the jobs..
Waiting to see where the guests are going to park their vehicles.
Bet there’s not 60 people in sandown that want a job
We stayed at the Carlton on one of our group holidays and when we revisited Sandown 2 years ago were surprised it was an open space. It is a lovely location and I have fond memories of mum in her wheelchair with 2 other elderly ladies sitting in the bay window and watching the boats whilst having a picnic lunch. It did need a lot doing at it and I’m looking forward to returning and staying at the new premier Inn when we visit Sandown next. Good luck to the team.
The cost to stay here will probably be less than it will cost you to park your car on the sea front.
More like economic refugeeeeeeees from Dover.
At last, a hotel that is new and modern. Shame about the eyesores on the rest of the seafront.
I think there won’t be many youngsters going for jobs at the hotel to much like hard work
