Retired Island Podiatrist, David Shields, a member of the Porsche Club GB 993 owners Register, has recently participated in the Register’s ‘Baton Challenge’ in aid of Parkinsons UK.
The aim is to pass the specially made Baton through as many parts of the UK as possible to raise money to help Parkinsons UK support those with the terrible disease in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years.
David says:
“The baton started at Lands End last April (2021). It travelled clockwise up the West Coast passing through Wales, the Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, travelling round the Scottish North Coast 500 and eventually to John O’Groats before passing back down the East Coast to London and then across the South Coast.
“I travelled over to Beaulieu Motor Museum and picked the baton up from a 993 owner and brought it back to the Island just before Christmas.
“993 owner Geoff Crawford, who made the baton from an old Porsche piston, came over and picked the Baton up from me and took it to Exmouth to pass it on to other owners, with the aim to get the Baton back to Lands End by 1st April (2022).
Speaking about his motivation for taking part in the fundraiser, David says:
“The chosen charity for the challenge, Parkinsons UK, is close to me as a very good friend, who I have known for over 40 years, was diagnosed with Parkinsons while still quite young. He was a very keen sportsman and enjoyed playing many sports including squash and tennis, which he has had to stop due to this debilitating disease.”
