Police and paramedics are in attendance at Ryde Esplanade where an incident has forced the suspension of all Island Line trains this evening (Tuesday).
Emergency services responded to the scene at the railway station at around 19:30.
The official line from South Western Railway is that a passenger has been taken ill on the train, between Ryde St John’s and Ryde Esplanade.
Island Echo is told that paramedics have ‘battled with an aerosol can’.
UPDATE @ 20:24 – 1 person has now been rushed to hospital under blue lights and sirens. All other resources have been stood down from the incident.
It’s said that 2 individuals were passed out on the train after ‘sniffing cans’ – Cream Deluxe canisters containing Nitrous Oxide – but it is unclear at this early stage if emergency teams were responding to these individuals.
UPDATE @ 21:20 – Trains are now running as normal, South Western Railway has confirmed.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY – A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that they were called at 19:37 to a concern for welfare of a man at Ryde Esplanade Station.
Officers attended the scene to assist paramedics.

Their ticket price makes me queezy
Spray tan do you think?
Two people were sniffing areosol cans, the roadworks are still ongoing, the road in pic still has to be finished
Must be a very sad sad place to be.
Island Echo is told that paramedics have battled with an aerosol can. What does this mean?- since when are aerosol cans able to fight ?. Something in whole story is missing.
‘Island Echo is told that paramedics have battled with an aerosol can’
Battled?
Fighting each other to get the last sniffs out of the can…
How bloody stupid, getting high from ‘sniffing aerosol cans’. Why do people do this? They take away life saving resource, the Ambulance service, from people who are genuinely ill through no fault of their own. Find some other way of getting your kicks that doesn’t involve our emergency services. The 1 person that was rushed to hospital under blue lights, is it one of the ‘sniffers’ I wonder?
Pretty much the same as those that choose alcohol and get wasted, fall over and need an ambulance
Totally agree, huge cost of resources for self inflicted, probably on benefits too. Yet people who need genuine help, medication, operations are denied on cost and left to die. I’m sure in many countries druggies and drunks are lowest on list for medical help and they are ones left to sort themselves or die.
NHS Isle of Wight need to send the idiots the bill, so do South Western Railways. Perhaps we need to search passengers for obnoxious substances prior to boarding any public transport.
That’s strange, I didn’t see anything like this on the recent TV programme about the island!
Hey man, what are you on?
Squirty cream, do you want some?
