Concern has been raised for the welfare of an individual who has boarded the harbour fuel berth on the River Medina, which has led to an emergency response by Police and HM Coastguard this afternoon (Friday). The incident began at around midday with multiple Police officers responding to Town Quay in Cowes, where they met with representatives of Cowes Harbour Commission. The Commission says it is aware of an ongoing incident in the vicinity of the fuel berth, with an individual having boarded the berth. Police and HM Coastguard – the latter of which arrived on scene around 13:15 – are said to be assessing the situation at this time. Cowes Harbour’s Patrols have made the fuel berth safe, it has been confirmed. No further comment is being made by the Commission at this time and Police are yet to provide a statement on this afternoon’s incident. UPDATE @ 15:20 – A male has been detained and removed from the scene, bringing the incident to a close. He has been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act, Police have confirmed.
