Plans for 3 houses next to Arreton Primary School have been proposed by local farmers A E Browns.
Permission is being sought from the Isle of Wight Council to build the properties on the corner of a greenfield site.
The site is next door to Arreton Primary School and could see 2x 3-bed houses and 1x 2-bed bungalow built on it.
As part of the highway works associated with the development, School Lane could be resurfaced.
It had been suggested that an additional school parking area could be included but parties agreed it was not necessary.
Planning agents, BCM, on behalf of the applicant, said the mix of properties proposed was suitable for the modest site and designed to fit in with the character of the area.
As part of the plans, new hedges could be planted at the front of the properties and surrounding the development.
The planning agents say, in documents submitted to the Isle of Wight Council, there is a need for family housing in the village and surrounding areas, and this development would meet the need.
You can view the application, 23/00435/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s website. Comments can be made until 25th April.

i can see it now –
the year 2100 – island news states “a local resident was arrested for concealing a patch of greenland at the rear of their home, that could have been used for much needed housing. The resident understood that 99.999% of the island was covered in houses already and that hiding this small garden sized bit of land, was selfish, as a small, single dwelling could have been erected.”
“in other news -local children have been treated to videos of greenfields, trees and plant life, which was accompanied by manufactured sounds and smells, to educate them in what the island was like before all greenfields, trees and plant life was removed to make way for “much needed housing”
Sounds like you have the dullest future vision ever. The rest of us foolishly imagined that the singularity would have occurred by 2100. AI would have dismantled the Solar System to produce computronium and ready to expand into the wider Universe. But no, all that has happened after almost 80 years is the building of more second homes. Never mind, we’ll all be dead by then. Roasted by the sun or submerged by ice melting. Happy days…
Brilliant appraisal.Never did the great Joni Mitchell song-‘Big Yellow Taxi’ lyrics ring so true..”paved paradise, put up a parking lot” ”Cut all the trees, put them in a tree museum and charged the people a dollar and a half just to see them”
Still wondering why the high-viz goons felled a majestic tree from the green space at the bottom of Ryde’s Union street ? In situ for decades and a fine sight to behold but now just a stump.
More prime growing land built on, NOT for a while, but for the rest of time.
Yet they bang on about climate change, yet every piece of ground built upon, especially as here in the ‘vegetable basket’ of the Island, means food which could have been grown locally will likely be imported from other countries using far more oil, or energy.
They ‘tell us’ what they wish us to believe when it suits their agendas.
Disgusting, lying people who get the dim naive on their side by pretending to ‘care’ for the planet, yet ALL they really care for is their own wealth and ‘use’ any means to fool the dim into achieving that aim.
The world isn’t run by nice, caring people, THINK
Since there is a need for family housing in the village, they should put a condition that only Island families can buy them. But there’s a good chance that all three will be bought by mainland retiree couples.
After all they have gorgeous views of Arreton Downs and will be priced accordingly.
soon to have gorgeous views of the next row of houses built – be warned.
Yep like a concrete cancer ever in search of fresh terrain to necrotise.Sussex is a prime example.Ugly, sterile and souless insults to the landscapes they violate.
Browns getting too greedy there. Leave greenfield sites alone. Plenty of empty houses on the island.
I think it’s terrible. And you just wait until they build Pennyfeathers too!
This site is actually in the designated AONB! What a ridiculous application.
I’m sure the whole Island was once AONB. But it seems only West Wight is protected now.
AND more houses this side of the Island.
Is there a reason Freshwater and the area between Newport and Freshwater is never built on.
Surely the houses built are only going to be purchased by mainlanders, so why is planning permission given. If houses were low cost for islanders i could understand.
Should we introduce a large tax on any properties purchased by mainlanders?
Surely not. It may stop the rich getting richer.
Probably not because mainlanders would stop visiting and the island would just be a destitute but sunny council estate.
