A former Isle of Wight convenience store – which has been empty for over a decade – could become houses.
Bridge Stores, on Monkton Street in Ryde, closed its doors in June 2010 and has not reopened since.
Now new plans have been lodged with the Isle of Wight Council, by owner Elaine Liddy, to transform the derelict shop, which is near St John’s Road Railway Station, into 2 3-bed houses.
The property was sold by auction last year, where it was said the current living accommodation behind the shop was in a ‘poor state of repair’.
The front of the store has deteriorated over the years the building stood empty but could be tidied up and refurbished under the proposals. As part of the plans, parking spaces have been proposed at the rear.
Ryde Town Council has commented to say it supports the plans, subject to conditions it includes cycle racks and an area for waste storage, and a financial contribution is made to provide affordable housing elsewhere.
You can view the plans, 23/01582/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be made until 20th October.

Ew who wants to live that close to public transport. Must be poors!
This Blot on the Landscape should have been bulldozed years ago
It makes Ryde look like it is twinned with Beirut.
IW Council should take control of buildings that bring an area down,
what must tourists think when coaches go.
This sh*thole has looked like this for 16+ years
Ryde, Newport and Sandown, are the most shithole places to live.
No brainer. This should be passed as it will provide reasonably priced much needed homes .All positive.
Why on earth wasn’t the owner made to do something about it years ago??
