Lake North By-election candidate Emily Brothers has said that sorting out the ‘dangerous’ Fairway/Lake Hill junction is one of her priorities, should she be elected.
Emily is standing to become a County Councillor in the forthcoming Lake North by-election, due to be held on 1st May. It follows her unsuccessful attempt to be elected as Isle of Wight East MP last year.
Speaking on the matter, Emily has said:
“The Fairway/Lake Hill junction is dangerous, particularly for pedestrians.
“Local people and visitors alike are telling me about their concerns about the hazardous junction of The Fairway with Lake Hill and Sandown Road. They are anxious about crossing the busy complicated roads and worry about safety for young people with The Bay School nearby and sports facilities also on The Fairway.
“I find that junction impossible to cross as a disabled woman even with brilliant support from my guide dog, Truffle. In order to get from A to B, I have to go out of my way to cross further along one of the roads and then come-back. Not everyone can walk that distance, whilst others will try to cross because it seems convenient.
“Motorists find the junction difficult to navigate sagely. They tell me the road scheme is confusing and pedestrians cross unpredictably at various points.
“It is important that Isle of Wight Council and Island Roads deliver solutions, including the introduction of traffic calming measures on The Fairway, in order to keep local people safe.
“I don’t have a fixed view on a resolution to this longstanding concern but feel that some redesign with traffic lights is a possible way forward. It may be necessary to reposition bus stops and other important features.
“This will be a priority should Lake North residents elect me to represent them. The starting points is to ask Islanders to signal their support for improvements. So, I have launched a petition asking Isle of Wight Council in conjunction with Island Roads to work with members of the community to find solutions for this dangerous junction. In turn, I will work hard with all concerned, including residents, businesses and community groups to develop the area.”

Whilst at it sort out the speeding problem
along Beachfield Road Sandown
“IT IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TOO HAPPEN”
How is it an accident waiting to happen on Beachfield Road? It’s a one way street with parking on the majority of the left hand side and traffic lights at the end. I can’t see the problem – there’s bigger problems on the roads to sort out first. This junction what Ms Brothers is campaigning about is dangerous – too much going on in a small space, and Tesco should never have been allowed to build there (indeed no one else would) without paying to alter the roads like Asda had to in Newport. The biggest question is can Island Roads really conduct an effective traffic management scheme down Perowne Way for months and months, as it will be chaos closing this main road!
Of course there is, because Numpty motorists
drive up Beachfield Road at 50mph+
Only need a vehicle coming out of one of
the side roads and BOOM !
Not wishing to demean Ms Brothers campaigning platform but that junction layout has been in existence for many years. The BIGGEST problem with it was when Council Planning AND Island Roads permitted Tesco Express to open with an entrance/exit onto a VERY busy junction., or is taking on the Council’s own Planning Department or a major supermarket chain beyond your abilities Ms. Brothers?
Also to help this junction they should move the bus stop
from Lake High Street to the pull in area nr the new toilet
block.
Sometimes buses are parked outside the old cinema
for too long causes unnesseccary tailbacks which
don’t help.
There does not seem to be many brains on the island
when it comes to installing bus stops etc.
