The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Freshwater’s Co-Responder attended Freshwater Bay this morning (Saturday) where an elderly man had sustained an injury whilst trying to rescue Candy, his pet Corgi.
The dog fell off the sea wall and into the water whilst out on a walk in the West Wight.
The patient entered the water to try to rescue his pet but got thrown against the sea wall by the tide, resulting in him being submerged in water and suffering an injury.
Fortunately, local resident Peter Kelly – who was walking his own dog at the time – helped the elderly man out of the water and to safety.
The injured casualty was conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport. Candy the Corgi is now home and drying off indoors.
Thanks has been given to Peter Kelly by the injured man and his wife.
Although on this occasion this incident had a happy outcome, emergency services are reminding anyone enjoying the island coastline and beaches to be aware of safety advice and what to do if you see anyone in distress in the water.
