Counting of ballot papers at Medina Leisure Centre.Re-elected Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones will swear her oath to an officer today (Wednesday) following her landslide victory on election day last week. Conservative Jones admitted securing a second term as police and crime commissioner was “even more victorious” given the difficult set of election results for her party across the county. Labour claimed nine PCCs from the Tories across England, while the party in government also lost hundreds of council seats after residents went to the polls on Thursday 2nd May. Ms Jones bucked these trends as she stormed to a significant majority over second-placed candidate Becky Williams (Labour) in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight contest. The former leader of Portsmouth City Council received 175,953 votes, with her nearest competitor gaining 106,141 votes. Here on the Island, Donna secured a total of 8,997 votes – around 50% of the total votes cast. Speaking after the declaration at Southampton Civic Centre on Friday 3rd May, Ms Jones said:
“I just want to say a huge thank you to the people of Hampshire and Isle of Wight for putting their trust and confidence in me. “I’m the first police and crime commission in the police force area to be re-elected for a second term. “I’ve got almost a 20 per cent majority here in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight – the fifth largest police force in the country, representing 2 million people and hundreds of thousands of businesses. That’s very humbling. It is a big job. There is a lot of work still to be done and the work for me starts tomorrow.”

About time she went and got a real job that offers some productivity, instead of swanning around, only breaking into a sweat when she’s about to miss the ferry.

Why do you keep calling it a landslide when only 16% bothered to vote ?????
I think it should be null and void unless over 50% of the population vote. How can she be celebrating when 84% of the population didn’t even cast a vote, she’s hardly ‘elected by majority’.
On the other side… why did 84% not vote, it’s the non-voters that mean we get the same rubbish re-elected again.
Well, I suppose it’s because it is a non-job that most people think should be abolished and the money spent directly on policing. All she does is raise her precept to pay for her burgeoning and completely pointless empire. Bring back Police Authorities made up of a committee of councillors, who cost us little more than some modest expenses once in a while.

Landslide victory only 16% of the island voted, this position is as pointless as a mayor

50% is not a landside victory. But then we do have first past the post so she only needed one vote more than the others to get absolute control.
Shame on the people who did not vote. You say there was no point voting as she would have got in away, seems like a self fulfilling prophecy. You can not complain about her record going forward if you did not vote. No vote no voice.
Use your vote or loose it. Voter apathy is how people like Putin get control.
Putin literally changed the constitution to remove the term limit for presidency, its a bit more than voter apathy. Also, that bomb he put in an apartment building helped quite a bit.
Like it or not, given that she got 175,953 votes, and the nearest rival just 106,141, that’s pretty much a landslide whichever way you look at it.
Mind you, it might well be down to the lack of decent alternatives put forward. One stated that her role model was the founder and leader of an organisation (MK, the armed wing of the ANC) which killed and injured innocent people, as well as police and army personnel, and the other saying he was standing in the election in order to abolish the role.
So, yes a landslide, but perhaps she was just the best of a bad bunch?
You can sort of understand voter apathy when there’s only one credible candidate put forward.
The former leader of Portsmouth City Council? What happened there then?
Why is this seemingly important role handed to career politicians?
They are using these roles as a platform to spout their politics, and their own self promotion. It is so wrong on so many levels that these important positions are hijacked by these politicians (that applies to all political entities), especially at a time when trust needs to be restored in the Police Forces. After all, the politicians have proved to the general public time and time again that they are not to be trusted.

It was not a landslide, we don’t need a PCC as the island ALWAYS get next to nothing in extra finance or policing, it’s a sick joke.

There really are some sad individuals posting on here. They have little knowledge about what the job entails but prepared to display their ignorance on-line. The woman won because she was the best. Even simpletons should be able to grasp that, but sadly they don’t !

Donna address Speeding on the Island
There are NO Rules
20 is plenty
Bring in strict rules like Wales and London, too many motorists are
speeding everyday.
Also parking on Pavements and Double Yellow Lines is rife
Outside Sandown Pier it is packed with vehicles parking on
Double yellow lines and they don’t have blue badges
they are just lazy B’stards who don’t want to pay.

Get real people. The most unsavoury, unlikely and unsuitable Isle of Wight candidates must always win… How else would we entertain ourselves from the comfort of our own armchairs? Character assassination of these oik’s is fun. Otherwise we’d only be resorted to watching hours of endless TV repeats or doing the naughty things that some men do in their vans I suppose… 😮

Why do people very often say they feel ‘humbled’ by winning something? If they truly did feel humbled, they wouldn’t be crowing about it in public. It’s usually a ‘humble-brag’.
Why does it look like she has eaten a Square?
Same tailor as the one used by David Byrne of Talking Heads?

Here share and vote tally were reduced so it is certainly not a ‘landslide’.
It’s more accurate to say she Held on with reduced majority.
If only people would vote for the candidate committed to abolishing the role. They could save us all a lot of money.
