Shanklin-Sandown Rowing Club has made history with 6 scullers competing at the country’s biggest sculling event and securing 4 top-10 finishes.
For the first time in the club’s history, a 6-strong squad represented Shanklin-Sandown at the Vesta Scullers’ Head in London last weekend.
Around 600 competitors took on the famous 6.7km Tideway course, passing some of the capital’s best-known landmarks, including Hammersmith Bridge, Harrods Furniture Depository, Craven Cottage and the bandstand.
The squad had trained hard in the weeks leading up to the event and faced a challenging, winding course, the navigation of several bridges and a wait of up to 3 hours at the start.
Despite the demanding conditions, Shanklin-Sandown surpassed expectations by securing 4 top-10 finishes across the respective categories.
Connie Batley-Smith produced another strong performance but narrowly missed out on overall victory, finishing 2nd.
Simon Nevitt also enjoyed an excellent row, maintaining a strong racing line to record the fastest Masters novice time overall. Once age-adjusted, his performance secured a commendable 4th place.
Digby Ridgwell also finished just outside the podium positions following a determined performance which saw him get the better of several strong rivals.
Esme Walters secured another top-10 result for the club, finishing 9th in the Women’s Club event.
Meanwhile, Rose Collier and Fin Diffey competed in particularly large fields, finishing 25th and 41st respectively.

“A great trip, with the results boding well for a successful Head race season.”
