An overheated battery is thought to have been the cause behind a garden blaze in East Cowes yesterday evening (Monday). As first reported by Island Echo, 3 fire appliances were mobilised to Vectis Road at just gone 18:00 when plumes of black smoke were reported rising from the rear garden of a terraced row of properties. A garden shed had gone up in flames, which subsequently spread to a hedge and threatened 2 family homes. Island Echo understands that a battery – used for a pressure washer – started smoking inside one of the houses, which was then thrown outside into the garden.
Thankfully, the quick actions of Newport’s wholetime firefighters saved the terraced row from any significant damage. The rear door of a neighbouring property was damaged by heat, as was the fascia. Some smoke damage has been reported internally. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Crews stood down shortly after 19:00.

Clarification please ( in the public interest) was the battery Lithium, Lead acid, or gel/sealed ?
Lead acid, as far as I know does not suffer from thermal runaway when improperly stored or charged. Too many rubbish China imports that don’t conform to proper controls. Stuff built in the UK and EU will have the correct safety systems in place to prevent this.
And EVs are the future!, can’t beat good old fashioned Diesel
Here we go, one battery fire and now we have to ban everything whilst ignoring all the phones, laptops and tablets that we all sleep right next to us. And also ignoring the many shed fires caused by people storing petrol tanks and paint thinners in their shed in the summer time. And lets not worry about the many fossil car fires on the island every year. But hay, why be sensible when our oil overloads demand that we loose our minds over a single battery fire. Maybe if the government enforced proper import rules we’ll not have any battery fires from junk from China.
