Openreach has started work to build a new broadband network for Shanklin – giving residents and businesses access to fast and reliable broadband.
The once-in-a-generation, full-fibre broadband upgrade will let thousands of local people connect multiple devices at gigabit-capable speeds and help businesses trade online and compete for decades to come.
Engineers have started work in Shanklin, and the build is expected to reach the majority of local homes and businesses.
Shanklin residents can visit openreach.co.uk/ultrafastfullfibre to register for updates and, as the build progresses, check their addresses to see when services are available from their chosen provider.
Martin Williams, Openreach Partnership Director, said:
“We’re bringing full fibre broadband to Shanklin and letting local people know what to expect.
“This is a major infrastructure upgrade, so there will be more engineering teams, equipment and vans around town, and we’re working hard to keep disruption to a minimum.
“Wherever possible, we’ll use our existing network of ducts and poles to avoid roadworks, new street furniture and disturbance. But there may be places where we need to install new poles, underground ducts and fibre cables because it’s the only way to make sure households get included in the upgrade.
“Openreach is committed to building the best full fibre network, and doing it sustainably is crucial for our business, the communities we serve, and the environment we all share. As part of our ‘Let’s Reach Zero’ strategy, we aim to lower our carbon emissions, use less and waste less material, and protect nature wherever we operate.”
The rollout in Shanklin is part of a wider push to expand full-fibre infrastructure across the UK as network operators accelerate gigabit broadband deployment.
“Every new full-fibre rollout helps move the UK closer to nationwide gigabit connectivity,” said Tomas Novosad, founder of Fibre In My Area, a UK broadband availability platform. “Projects like the Shanklin deployment show how fibre networks are steadily expanding beyond major cities and into smaller communities. As these rollouts continue, more households will gain access to faster and more reliable broadband options.”

DOH!
And why Shanklin?
What about the younger demographic?
Wonderful.
wightfibre already has this. BT or Openreach wont provide the same speeds and cost more. Not an add for Wightfibre but they have been very good
WF are first class, and their customer service is excellent.
My sister lives in a full fibre area on the mainland and BT have been promising her broadband now for 9 MONTHS. Every time an appointment is made, they cancel at the last minute.
I’m also not sure why anyone would want to ally themselves to a company who knowingly sacrificed UK personal data to companies tied to the Chinese military which many other countries, including the EU, have said is a known security risk.
Wightfibre are good, speed is fast and not one single drop in speed. BT as usual are playing catch up.
