The occupants of a pick-up truck have been extricated by firefighters after being ploughed into by a lorry at Downend this afternoon (Monday). The incident has occurred at the Downend traffic light junction where Downend Road meets The Downs Road. Emergency service personnel were called to the scene at around 13:15 with multiple resources responding including 2 fire engines, a rescue tender, an enhanced care paramedic, a doctor and Police. It’s understood that the Mitsubishi L200 – which has come to rest on its side – was travelling off of The Downs when it was side swiped by a lorry towing a digger belonging to CD Fencing, which was travelling towards Arreton. No serious injuries are reported but the occupants of the L200 are being checked over by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being as all approaches are closed and traffic is building. Recovery of the vehicles is being arranged but it is thought the road will remain closed for at least the next hour, impacting on the afternoon school run. UPDATE @ 17:00 – 2 people have been taken to hospital with minor injuries. The road has now re-opened following recovery of the lorry and the overturned pick up.
