The Liberal Democrats have selected Nick Stuart as their candidate for the by-election in the Brighstone, Calbourne and Shalfleet electoral division.
The by-election will be called following the resignation of Conservative Steve Hastings.
Nick Stuart has lived in the ward for many years and is a parish councillor on both Brighstone Parish Council and Calbourne, Porchfield and Newtown Parish Council. He is a former senior civil servant with expertise in science and technology and a former school teacher here on the Isle of Wight. Currently, he runs his own business as a fencing coach.
Chair of the Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats, Steph Burgess-Flux, says:
“Nick is a fantastic candidate with a wealth of experience. He works hard for his local communities and is best placed to win this seat as he came 2nd last time, with an increased vote share, to the resigning councillor, Steve Hastings.”
Nick has said:
“As a Parish councillor, I have worked for residents on all sorts of issues. From conservation of the local environment, planning, traffic & parking issues, through regular litter picking and planting a hedge in the cemetery. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know people in our area, enjoying events and talking about the important things in our lives. All the things that make this area special: from the landscape and heritage to the people & strong community groups. We can recognize that, in spite of the current challenges, there are opportunities for local industry and local communities.
“If elected I will carry on talking to and helping residents while representing our interest in the Council and other groups on the Island.”

Good luck to him, but he doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell in that ward.
You could stick a blue rosette on a dog turd and they’d vote for it.
Why does it matter what party you are in for parish coumcils? surely it is the village business you should be championing. Also you do realise that social distancing has finished, you can leave the lib dems now
Three points.
I have known Nick for many years, intelligent, hard working and a huge amount of common sense which is sadly lacking in a lot of council officials, good luck to him.
