An NHS Careers Fair aimed at students who attend secondary school on the Isle of Wight has been deemed a great success, with over 300 people attending the event last Saturday (21st November).
Visitors were given hands-on displays using manikins to demonstrate how to place a flexible tube into a patient’s throat (intubation), perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (known as CPR) and how to use a defibrillator.
Over 300 people attended the event which was aimed at engaging young students as soon as possible in their school life and influencing their choice of educational options. Among the exhibitors were the School Nursing Team, Occupational Therapy, Paramedics, Memory Service, Midwifery, Hospital Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit (HSDU), Pharmacy, Mental Health services, diagnostic imaging (X-Ray/MRI Scans), medical education, Blood Services, Estates Management, Finance, Apprenticeships, HR and volunteering and Administration.
Feedback from the event included comments such as:
“Really interesting event, thank you. Such enthusiastic staff. My 14-year old son engaged with it all – especially appreciated the chance to get hands-on with resuscitation, intubation, etc”
“Extremely impressed with the stallholders/stalls, which helped my granddaughter understand which subjects she will need to pursue her career as a medic. She was very excited and motivated.”
Event Organiser, Dawn Jones, said:
“There is so much on offer at St Mary’s Hospital. It’s not just about being a doctor or a nurse, there is a diverse range of careers from finance to administration, catering and looking after our estate. This event has helped us to showcase the diverse range of NHS careers on offer right on the doorstep here on the Isle of Wight.
“This is the first Careers Fair we’ve held on this scale and it’s been such a success that we will be holding another event in April next year”.
More details about the April Careers Fair will be released next year.
