Train fans everywhere are being given the ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to own 1 of the former Island Line train carriages after it was listed on online auction site eBay – and it can be yours for just £32,000!
The former London Underground stock was removed from the Isle of Wight in March – being lifted off the rails at Ryde St Johns Station by crane before being transported to the mainland on a low loader.
Built in 1938 for service in London, the 83-year-old trains served the Island between 1989 and 2021 before being officially retired. They will soon be replaced by refurbished Class 484 trains as part of a £26million investment programme. The last Class 483 ran on 3rd January 2021.
The seemingly genuine listing on eBay for carriage number 225 – which formed part of unit 483002 – described the train as ‘used’ and after the end of its life being spent as a donor vehicle, it is in need of full restoration with the seller apparently having conducted a brief inspection of the carriage.
More details reveal that the carriage has had all hazardous materials removed, and that the seller can assist in renovating the unit as part of a separate contract if desired.
If you’re interested in snapping up this piece of railway heritage, you can find the listing here.

Could it not be used as a floating bridge alternative?
No its too rusty, it’d sink.
Free delivery?? Lol.
So this venerable 83 year old is being returned to the mainland, covered in graffiti.
– What does that say about island life (or island youth) ??
Why not confert them for the homeless to sleep in instead of leaving them on the streets
Think Ebay could offer more Nectar points on a sale this large.
GWR are short off trains at the moment…
