The demolition of The Carlton Hotel in Sandown, and the building of a brand new Premier Inn hotel in its place, has been approved by the Isle of Wight Council this week.
As exclusively revealed by Island Echo back in December last year, the nationwide chain plan to open their third hotel on the Isle of Wight on Sandown Esplanade. It will be the largest Premier Inn on the Island and will include a Brewers Fayre restaurant on the ground floor.
The Carlton Hotel will now be demolished ahead of the construction of the new hotel. It is hoped demolition can get underway early next year, however a schedule of works is yet to be confirmed.
Although there were some objections to the planning application citing noise, parking and appearance as concerns, a large amount of support was received, including from Sandown Town Council.
Work must begin on site by November 2019 but cannot start until some planning conditions have been met, including submitting a construction method statement to Island Roads and the submission of a flood warning and evacuation plan.
Derek Griffin, Head of Acquisitions London & South for Premier Inn, has told Island Echo:
“Getting the green light for our investment plans into Sandown is great news and we welcome the Council’s decision to press the button on what should be a significant scheme for Sandown.
“Subject to the consent being formally issued, we’ll be looking to fix a detailed timetable for building the new hotel and to have it open as soon as possible, investing more than £9m and creating around 65 new year round jobs.”
Meanwhile Les Pink, owner of The Carlton has said:
“I am very pleased that the planning application has been approved.
“I am looking forward to seeing this new multi million pound Premier Inn & Brewers Fayre development come to the town and I am sure this will be the catalyst for the regeneration of Sandown”.
