PHOTO GALLERY: Islanders came together to enjoy a parade through the streets of Newport yesterday evening (Saturday) in celebration of Isle of Wight Day.
Classic vehicles, a military machine and Southern Vectis buses both new and old were included in the parade alongside 2 marching bands, Ventnor Comic Jazz Band, FaT Samba, carnival queens and local community groups such as the Brownies.
The Isle of Wight Police Cadets marched on whilst the parade was led by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Other participants included WightSAR – the Island’s voluntary search and rescue team – and Ability Dogs 4 Young People. The Isle of Wight Freemasons also made an appearance wearing their regalia in public for the first time in over 100 years.
The parade set off from Newport Quay at just gone 17:30 before making its way towards the High Street and then through the streets of Newport Town Centre to St George’s Park, where the day’s celebrations were brought to a close. Anyone with a birthday of 24th September received a slice of cake and Happy Birthday was sung.
One of the more unusual floats in the parade was the Isle of Wight Day-themed cow from Tapnell Farm. Bearing the logo designed by Bright Bulb Design, the cow was towed through the streets after touring the Island on Friday.
Isle of Wight Day came about thanks to the Island’s High Sheriff, Robin Courage MBE. Businesses and residents alike have put in tremendous effort throughout the year to cover the Island in bunting and bring a sense of celebration to towns and villages.
