The demolition of the derelict Savoy Court in Sandown is progressing well, with plans on track for the eyesore to be completely flattened by the end of February.
Local firm Ryde Demolition have been working to clear the site since July and have already demolished the two adjoining houses. The team have now begun working on the corner building, which is set to be brought to the ground by the end of November.
Following a large fire back in December 2011, the once grand hotel has stood in a derelict, fire-damaged state and has been considered by many as one of the biggest eye sores in the seaside town. In its heyday the Savoy Hotel – located at the start of Sandown’s High Street at the junction with Victoria Road and Avenue Road – was a grand building that attracted visitors to Sandown, but it fell into disrepair becoming an unattractive and unwanted part of Sandown after being turned into apartments.
As previously reported by Island Echo back in January, work to demolish the building was meant to begin by May as part of the planning permission given by the Isle of Wight Council for a brand new apartment block, with a total of 19 self-contained flats and associated parking with attractive landscaping.
The land is now up for sale with the granted planning permission for an undisclosed fee.
