Three candidates are competing to be the councillor for the Isle of Wight Council ward of Newport West in the upcoming local elections.
Frank Brown of Reform UK, The Green Party’s Chris Mace and Raymond Redrup from the Local Conservatives have been nominated to stand as candidates in the ward before voters head to the polls on May 7.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) reached out to candidates for 100-word pitches and photos, either directly or via parties or groups.
Here’s what they had to say, in no particular order…
Frank Brown
I’ve lived in Newport for the past 15 years, becoming part of the community and seeing firsthand the issues that matter most to local people.
My background includes service as a military reservist, where I developed discipline, resilience, and a strong sense of duty— values I believe should be at the heart of public service.
I’m committed to being a visible, approachable representative who listens—and acts.
Chris Mace
I am a retired bus driver and live on the Island with my wife and our two dogs. I know the area of Newport West and how many families have chosen to move here because of its location and community facilities.
But there are real worries about road safety and speeding, and concerns about any further house building and loss of green spaces for wildlife. My priorities for the Isle of Wight Council include tackling the issue of expensive ferries which have prices too high for many Islanders.
I would also prioritise access to an NHS dentist, as too many of us cannot get appointments.
Raymond Redrup (incumbent ward councillor)
I’ve been back on our Island for the last 30 years. My wife and I started our bakery business, Grace’s. I’ve also volunteered for Samaritan, served as chairman of the MMA, worked with the Cowes Harbour Commission and Newport Harbour.
My company supported Alzheimer’s charity. Three years ago, when diagnosed with cancer, I raised money for Cancer Research. Grace’s is actively involved in training our young Islanders.
I believe my life experiences have made me an effective councillor for the past five years and I’m ready to face the next four years’ challenges for Newport West residents.
