51-year-old Shaun Barlow, who used cannabis to ease his pain for fibromyalgia and gout, has been disqualified from driving for 14 months.
Barlow, of Camp Hill in Newport, pleaded guilty to drug driving and possession of a controlled drug of Class B – Cannabis, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (10th March).
The court heard how Barlow was subject to a traffic stop by Police on Newport’s Lugley Street. It was here that he provided a positive roadside drugs wipe, with the level of THC in his blood later found to be 7µg/L, with the legal limit set at 2µg/L.
Jim Osbourne, defending, told the court how Barlow suffers from painful medical conditions, including Fibromyalgia, Gout and Arthritis, for which his prescribed medication does not help.
Barlow turned to marijuana to ease his pain.
Addressing the bench, Barlow said that even after his disqualification ends, he will never drive again and has sold his car as the pain of doing so is just too great.
Magistrates handed Shaun Barlow a £253 fine and a 14-month driving disqualification.

Great to hear that a motorist who done wrong
will no longer drive in the future.
Anyone taking such substances for pain should NOT
drive.
Buses, Trains or Taxis are available.
