A group of Ryde Harriers travelled to Netley last weekend (Sunday 19th May) despite cross-Solent travel plans nearly ruining their day before it had even started. Unlike Red Funnel, who struggled to field a full team Sunday morning for their sailings, a team of 13 Ryde Harriers eventually made their way to the HRRL Netley 10k. Due to a staffing shortage, all Red Jet sailings were cancelled, resulting in a hurried change of plan for those making their way to the West Cowes terminal. Thankfully, all made it across the chain ferry, which was kindly held up, allowing everyone to make the next car sailing from East Cowes in the nick of time. A slightly chilly 9:30 start to the race, which this year was organised by Netley Abbey, featured a course change around the Royal Victoria Country Park. A one-time early section of the route meandered through a forest before 3 laps that seemed more mixed terrain than all tarmac roads. With a long, sweeping descent towards the water’s edge before a steady incline back up towards the end of each loop and eventually, a sprint finish past the chapel to the finish line. Finishers were rewarded with a matching cowbell that marshalls had all been rattling at runners throughout the race and a selection of fresh fruit. Results for Netley 10km, 19th May
