A yacht with 4 persons on board has run aground at Whitecliff Bay near Bembridge, prompting a multi-agency emergency response this lunchtime (Saturday).
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor have been joined on scene by Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Island Echo is told that the yacht ran aground at the base of Culver Cliff at around 11:30.
Although 3 of the 4 people on board the casualty vessel have been able to make it ashore by walking along the now-exposed ledge, 1 person has had to be transferred from the yacht to the beach with assistance from the Coastguard.
The male casualty – who has breathing difficulties – has been transferred into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and is expected to be conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land shortly. An ambulance officer has also been in attendance at the incident.
Attentions have now turned to how best to recover the yacht – if at all possible on this tide. The vessel is in very shallow water.
HM Coastguard has issued a stark warning to anyone heading to the coast this weekend. Read more at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/stark-warning-to-anyone-heading-to-the-coast-this-weekend/.

Are they all from the same family?
Were they all from the same household ?
Were they all from the same household
They don’t are not heeding the Coastguard’s stark warning then they should be charged or fined if they had to pay what it cost to launch the lifeboat plus the cost of the ambulance etc they wouldn’t do it again in a hurry wasting our valuable emergency resources it makes you wonder not only are they all from the same family but do they live on the island
Or they would still do it and not call it in if they start hesitating because there is a cost to consider.
Difficult one
so would that all so go for when theirs a car crash of a fire or a bike fall. the coastguard are there to do a job that they chose but you want anyone in a bit of a jam pay for it and before you say they should have done this and that what about the cars that hit walls and roll over.
or would you just rather the coast guard police firemen imbalances just sit about doing sod all and getting paid for it. But i take it you are so perfect and do nothing wrong ever you must be right and they must pay
Thanks fisherman, the voice of reason. Rare nowadays in this part of the world.
They need to go to Barnard Castle and test their eyes.
Barnard Castle…Yep I get it, “don’t do as I do. Do as I say
If one of them had breathing difficulties I hope they isolate the rest and test them all, how damn selfish if they are not from the same family.
Typical. Charge them for the rescue AND fine them if they are breaking lockdown rules. As for the yacht, search it with proper PPE on of course, and then quarantine it.
Calm down!
yes calm the f down
Obviously not very good sailors if they run aground.
You hit the nail on the head there Stu.
Why is there no warning system inshore, small boats do not heed Cardinal buoys.
Bembridge ledge is so regularly a hazard, surely there is something that could be done.
The owner/ master of vessel that is rescued should be made to do a course on navigation.
Or fined and community service to pay for all the nuisance they have caused.
Strange when a car crashes or is caught speeding, going wrong way up street, they are fined, given points, even fined for having a wheel on the white line of a parking bay,and in some cases put on a course to show them what not to do.
The craft in question is hardly a Yacht, it’s a dinghy almost overloaded, 4 adults?
Am a mariner of 50+ years and just in a couple of weeks I have seen 3 boats on the ledge. Also a member of RYA, and hold numerous licences/ certificates.
Notice to Sailors, look at the way the Islanders comment before you take your earnings to the Wight.
Don’t have to be a sailor I’ll take your earnings if you offer them to me.
Still waiting for one nice sentence about tourists before I take my earnings somewhere else!
Sorry I’m not a sailor, so please don’t lambast me but really should they be out there on a jolly boat trip?!! We’re are still in lock down. Hope everyone ok. Xx
I’m not going to name them but the two volunteer lifeboat crew from Sandown who drove their vans recklessly whilst responding to this should be banned from driving.
It was an emergency wasn’t it? What were they doing then? What about ambulances and fire engines etc running red lights etc? Should they be banned for driving recklessly?
No Greg. That’ll be normal driving for the island.
Likely been at some intoxicating substance(s).
