Monkey Haven has announced the passing of one of its original and most cherished residents, Xhabu the Siamang, who died peacefully aged 28.
Xhabu arrived in 2006 with his nephew Bog, just as the sanctuary was beginning its journey to becoming an award-winning rescue centre.
Despite being born with disabilities, Xhabu quickly became a central figure, beloved for his gentle nature and powerful calls that echoed across the site.
Don Walser, Founder of Monkey Haven, has said:
“Xhabu was more than just an animal in our care – he was family.
“His presence brought immense joy, comfort, and inspiration to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Xhabu formed a unique bond with 2 Müller’s gibbons, Bono and Kajan, with whom he lived peacefully – an unusual and heart-warming interspecies friendship. In July 2023, he suffered a stroke but continued to enjoy a supported and enriched life under the dedicated care of the team.
Lisa Simpkins, long-time animal carer, has said:
“His courage and trust in us were humbling.
“He taught us so much about love, patience, and strength.”
Xhabu’s story inspired countless people around the world through social media and education campaigns. The sanctuary is now planning a small memorial garden in his honour.
