More than 70 women gathered at the Island Sailing Club in Cowes on Wednesday evening for the launch of Island Women, a new monthly series celebrating the stories and achievements of women connected to the Isle of Wight.
The inaugural event featured talks from High Sheriff Jacqueline Gazzard, UKSA Chief Executive Catherine Dixon and author and Professor of Architecture Lorraine Farrelly, who shared their experiences with those attending.
Island Women has been created by broadcaster Cheryl Buggy and will feature both live events and podcasts highlighting inspiring women who live or work on the Isle of Wight.
Cheryl Buggy, Broadcaster and Founder of Island Women, has said:
“I wanted to set up a series of podcasts and live events to share the positive and inspirational stories of the many amazing women who live or work on the island.
“The fact that so many women came to the first event and gave such positive feedback shows that such an initiative is welcome and needed, which is great!”
Those attending heard personal stories and reflections from the guest speakers, with organisers saying the strong turnout and feedback demonstrated the appetite for such an initiative on the Isle of Wight.
Jacqueline Gazzard, High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, has said:
“Sometimes you don’t know how much you need an initiative until you are enjoying it.
“We have so many amazing women on this island and it was an absolute joy being in their company. Thank you Cheryl.”
Island Women plans to host further monthly events alongside a free weekly podcast series.
