Monkey Haven has announced the sad passing of Grivet monkey Malta, a much-loved resident who was rescued from the illegal pet trade.
Malta’s life began in difficult circumstances after he was discovered at Malta Airport and rescued by Stichting AAP, an animal welfare organisation working to combat the illegal trade in exotic animals.
The Grivet monkey had been smuggled from Libya and was found in a sports bag wrapped in duct tape. Malta spent time in The Netherlands before he was given a permanent home at Monkey Haven in 2016.
Malta lived with epilepsy, a condition that required ongoing monitoring, medication and dedicated support from the Haven’s animal care team.
Over time, he developed into a characterful and playful monkey, known for his mischievous streak and strong personality.
Staff say he formed close bonds with his carers, who came to know his favourite sunny resting spots and individual quirks.
Taking to their Facebook page, Monkey Haven have said:
“Our team knew him inside and out, his favourite sunny spots, his familiar expressions, his unique quirks. He formed deep bonds with those who cared for him and, like all of our residents, became part of our family.
“Saying goodbye is never easy.”
