Schools, businesses, staff, patients and the MP for Isle of Wight West marked Go Yellow 2024 in aid of Mountbatten Isle of Wight last week (Friday 11th October).
There was a lot of dressing up and much eating of yellow food. Meanwhile, across the week, a treadmill challenge saw people walk enough miles to cover the same distance as Walk the Wight, which turns 35 in 2025.
At Lanesend Primary School in Cowes, children wore yellow and ran a cake sale, with some delicious things to buy. They were not the only ones. Schools across the Isle of Wight joined in the fun.
At the John Cheverton Centre, in Newport, Mountbatten set themselves the challenge of walking the Wight as many times as they could, across the week leading up to the big day.
Among those who took part were patients, some of whom were attending rehab sessions and workshops at the on-site community centre and cafe, staff, visitors and Isle of Wight West MP, Richard Quigley. Mountbatten has now revealed that between those who took part, a total of 52 miles was walked.
In 2025, the iconic Isle of Wight fundraising walk, which covers around 26 miles between Bembridge and Alum Bay, will celebrate its 35th birthday.
A daytime disco, called Sunday Skool, lots of dressing up (including by solicitors, doctors and nurses) and a coffee morning were also among the fundraising events. The John Cheverton Centre cafe served cakes, while our staff embraced the yellow theme of the day. As well as characters from TV comedy, Hi-de-Hi, there were chickens and lots of sunflowers.
The evening was rounded off with a Go Yellow-themed quiz night.
A trophy was awarded to winners Vikie Morgan, John Sharman, Dale Millward and Duncan Fleming, who spent the duration of the quiz dressed as chickens.
Mountbatten Isle of Wight is 1/3 funded by the NHS but this money has not changed in line with inflation, and even this is under threat.
Island Echo was invited to take part, with the team completing 4km on the treadmill. Thanks to Mountbatten Isle of Wight for having us!
