Hampshire Constabulary requested the assistance of the Ministry of Defence Police overnight in arresting a man on board a boat who was wanted on suspicion of sexual assault.
Last night Police received reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted in the East Cowes area, prompting a full scale investigation.
Officers identified a suspect on board a boat so requested the assistance of the MOD Police launch to transfer local officers onto the vessel.
It has now been confirmed that a 33-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.
He remains in custody at this time.
The alleged victim is currently being supported by specialist officers.
Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the exact circumstances.

I remember when Ashburton was moored at Cowes. That of course was when Cowes had a police station. Ashburton, for those who don’t know, was the Hampshire & Isle of Wight police launch.
Ashburton has fond memories for me, lovely old Nelson boat my Father was on blue watch as Navigator, but been scraped now.
These pervs are fortunate indeed that in the violent times with weak sentences that the men folk of these victims don’t dish out there own justice.
Suspicion of sexual assault, doesn’t mean the was an assault. Wait until the investigation has finished.
People do not understand the police process. Even if no charges are bought it still doesn’t mean an assault didn’t take place it just means there’s not enough evidence to charge.
