Mixed reactions have been received about new parking restrictions in Ventnor, a consultation has found.
10 schemes across the town have been proposed by the Isle of Wight Council to help the movement of traffic and increase road safety. The proposals would create passing points, free-up footways and increase visibility.
To do so, however, double yellow lines could be introduced and some existing parking restrictions made enforceable to remove ‘inappropriate parking’.
A total of 865 comments were received over the 10 schemes — ranging from very supportive to strongly objecting.
4 of the schemes — on the Eastern Esplanade, Victoria Street, Leeson Road and Shore Road — received more comments in favour, with residents saying would make some of the areas safer, for example reducing the risk for children crossing the road to reach the seafront paddling pool, whilst others said the schemes would make it easier for buses to pass.
5 others — Albert Street, St Catherine Street, Esplanade Road, Park Avenue and the Esplanade — were strongly objected to.
Among the objections were remarks about the difficulty to park in the town already whilst others said they were unnecessary restrictions as they have never noticed any road safety problems.
The proposals for Steephill Road received roughly the same amount of supportive comments and objections.
The authority says it has tried to keep the extent of the restrictions to a minimum to save as many parking spaces as possible. However, it also says it has a duty to ensure road users’ safety and the movement of traffic so some spaces needed to be removed.
The council’s cabinet will decide on Thursday (9th February) whether to go ahead with all of the schemes, only some, or none of them.
If all the schemes were to be introduced, it would cost the authority £12,815 +VAT to make the orders and implement the changes.

The council is determined to put an end to all our town centres. Bet they won’t support more buses.
There is absolutely no reason to suspend parking for residents in Albert Street whatsoever. It’s wide enough for the biggest vehicles, parking is only down one side and it’s a one-way street. This must be political. The people responsible for making these decisions must take into account that they will affect the price of property and the owners’ ability to sell when the time comes.
Nicely dressed up as a ‘consultation’ when it is just more, already decided, double yellow line painting on top of the island wide extra double yellow line painting they undertake annually, as they look to meet Whitehall’s net zero demands to gradually force people out of their cars – this is nothing to do with safety and everything to do with more social engineering to remove independent freedom of movement currently enjoyed by the average Joe
I’d love that independent freedom you talk about: to walk safely in Ventnor with my limited eyesight, maybe JUST A FEW pedestrianised streets so I don’t have to worry about cars, or wider pavements, that would be awesome. Can I have that freedom or is that only for car owners?
Superb get them painted! Then get ya self over Cowes way!!
If you haven’t noticed any problems with road safety I’m happy to hop on a cycle around Ventnor with you or go for a walk with a baby in a stroller 😉 sidewalk from a picture looks safe for a chill walk with your kids, eh?
Whoever gave me thumbs down must really love the world-class infrastructure of that pictured bus stop, eh? Protection from weather elements, noise and traffic, beautiful space dedicated for the bus to stop, sidewalk wide-enough for pedestrians to pass by, a pleasure to use for wheelchair users no doubt!
You’re right, no safety to improve here.
I know you’re being sarcastic, but Great British roads are actually great. Who cares about pedestrians, we’re driving through
Town center is horrible to walk in, the pavements are tiny.
