The Isle of Wight sailing team will be heading to this year’s Orkney Island Games seeking their first gold medal since 2007 in the team event at Rhodes.
Our sailing team took team silver in Guernsey in 2023 and are hoping to top the podium places this year.
Isle of Wight sailors include:
16-year-old Olly Mayo is in the British Youth Sailing Team and has been competing in ILCA 6 for 2 years. He began sailing 6 years ago at Yarmouth Sailing Club.
Arthur Farley has recently returned from Quindao in China where he competed in his 1st ILCA World Championships as a Senior. Arthur has previously been an U17 European Champion.
25-year-old Harry White is competing in his 3rd Island Games in ICLA 7. Harry – who was part of the silver winning Isle of Wight team in Guernsey – was named British young sailor of the year in 2022. Last year, Harry became 8-metre First Rule World Champion.
Oliver Smith has represented Great Britain at the Youth European Championships. Oliver came 2nd at the ILCA National Open Championships in March.
The Isle of Wight has won a total of 15 podium places at Island Games sailing events: 5 gold, 8 silver and 2 bronze medals.
There will be 3 competitions: ILCA 7 (formerly Laser Standard Rig), ILCA 6 (formerly Laser Radial Rig) and the Sailing Team event. Islands have a maximum of 2 competitors in each individual event. The dinghies are provided by the host Islands. Both classes will compete in 10 races, twice a day.
The sailing races begin on Sunday 13th July, with medals awarded on Thursday 17th July. All events take place at the Orkney Sailing Club, based at the Island’s capital in Kirkwall.
