A meat cleaver and a machete have been seized on the streets of Shanklin overnight.
Police conducted a stop and search on a male in the seaside town late last night (Friday) and discovered 2 large, concealed bladed articles.
A 26-year-old man was taken in for questioning at Newport Police Station.
It has been now confirmed by Hampshire Constabulary that the 26-year-old has been interviewed and summonsed for the offence.
The knives have been destroyed.
Sergeant Sharland of the Shanklin Neighbourhood Policing Team says:
”These offences are rare, partly because we continue to proactively disrupt and prevent knife crime, discouraging the carrying of bladed articles and keeping our Island safe”.
UPDATE – Following a review of the circumstances in which the items were being used and in his possession, a decision has been made to release the 26-year-old with no further action.
The items have nonetheless been seized for destruction.
Police want to reassure the public that they take knife crime extremely seriously and there will often be very serious consequences for those who unlawfully carry bladed items.

Crime is on the increase on the Island for sure, all kinds of crime, there needs to be an investigation into why this is happening.
Or, the reporting of crime in the press is on the increase. If crime is on the increase we all know why, they cut the police force.
London comes to Shanklin, but not in a good way! Thankfully a very rare incident on the island, generally this sort of crime does not even get reported on the mainland.
Shanklin is hardly London
Take a visit to see the difference.
I recommend Hackney Brixton or Peckham
Good luck
Mabe the 3 idiots that were running around near the railway station, screaming and shouting for ever last night,
What baffles me is why was he arrested on ‘ ‘suspicion’ when quite clearly the items have been found on him, unless of course he is a butcher who does an Indiana Jones tribute act on the side!!!!
The trouble is the public hold their hands up in amazement at these criminal offences but when
shove comes to push do nothing to help the police. Stand up and be counted!!
Well said “rocket Ron”, but people don’t, I myself occasionally get involved and normally end up on the wrong end of the stick, only last week I confronted the 3 youths who were graffiting sandown station and rugby club, only to be verbally abused and threatened, but I have not seen them since! Stand up and be counted!
Well done..good on u…pd

Can’t help feeling that whoever it was should still be under lock and key.
Because unlikely as it may be he may of a good reason for having them as he might be a chef or butcher very unlikely but still innocent until proven guilty
The Knives have been destroyed? Before his court date? Since when is evidence destroyed prior to trial?
Those items were somones prpoperty and look to be serviceable tools.
The police may have a right to confiscate them from the carrier pending the outcome of a prosecution but i think destroying them may well be unlawful. They may have been stolen from their legal owner. Sergeant Sharland should provide some clarification.
Well done police in this instance if you carry a weapon then there is intent there
Some people carry thing,s. Because they want 2 get home in 1 piece.,.banana,s. Don’t count..pd
Whoever lets council members retake their seats when deals with problem areas has been proved is to blame. Low lifes have always been, however honest, hardworking Island folk are going to work everyday, mostly for people who don’t actually live here, only to be told our old normality of peace is old hat if you don’t welcome the scumbags (of every financial bracket) who make our Vectis a more diverse environment. Meanwhile, the horrid ones break into our Cancer Hospice and kidnap pensioners, and the really lovely ones develop every green space you ever loved as a nipper, so they can cover it in concrete.
WTF…….. released without any further action! What are these stupid judges on? What do you have to do to get a custodial sentence over here? Kill someone? Unbelievable. The poor police must get so frustrated.
