A man who suffered a potentially life threatening injury on a boat off the coast of the Isle of Wight was flown directly to St Mary’s Hospital this afternoon (Saturday) due to the time-critical nature of his injuries.
At 13:53, HM Coastguard received a request to provide a medical evacuation of an injured man from a vessel situated 25 miles South South West of St Catherine’s Point.
The Coastguard helicopter based at Lee-on-Solent responded to the call for help and flew across the Island and out into the English Channel within minutes of the alert.
With the casualty successfully winched aboard the chopper, it was decided to take the him directly to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, despite St Mary’s not being designated as a major trauma centre or specialist hospital. This was due to the severity of the situation, with St Mary’s’ helipad offering almost immediate access to the A&E department.
The Coastguard helicopter has to land away from the hospitals in both Southampton and Portsmouth, with patients then conveyed the last part of the journey by road.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team responded to the helicopter landing site ahead of Rescue 175’s hot arrival on the pad.
The injured man was transferred into the hands of doctors and nurses at St Mary’s Hospital before the helicopter returned to Lee-on-Solent.
