A person stuck in the mud near St Catherine’s Point resulted in a call out for HM Coastguard and the fire service earlier this afternoon (Friday). Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a man stuck in mud in the South Wight at around 13:30. Firefighters from Newport and Shanklin were mobilised to the most southerly point of the Island, alongside the Rescue Support Vehicle from Newport. A duty fire officer was also sent to the scene. Emergency teams rendezvoused at Old Blackgang Road car park at Rocken End with only a short walk to the casualty. Due to the remote nature of the incident, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Ventnor and The Needles were also tasked to the scene, as well as resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service with 1 ambulance and an Operational Commander deployed. Upon the arrival of firefighters, the casualty had managed to free himself from the ooze. He was helped back to solid ground before being passed into the care of paramedics. The stop message came in at 14:30, with all involved returning to their respective bases soon afterwards. This latest incident comes less than a week after 2 similar mud rescues in the vicinity of Thorness, on the North coast of the Island.

All those resources at speed and leaving potentially others with out if needed. Why is it that coastguard team’s can’t handle?. Two emergency medical teams and again no reported injuries. Feel for the embarrassment of the poor guy to think all this.
Bit of over kill to say the least ,,, but the guy is a bloody idiot also
Yes and keeps happening too
How do you conclude that the “guy is a bloody idiot “? He did exactly the right thing in the original circumstance that he found himself in, according to the official advice provided by the emergency services. If he had not been able to free himself it could have been an entirely different matter.
I agree with Scot.
Anyone with any common sense. would never get stuck in the mud – shame he had a phone to alert the emergency services, in this instance. Having said this, I’m glad there were no injuries!
Idiot comment,think before you comment.
See my previous response to Scot. I doubt that you have any common sense judging by your comment.
Andy pandy pudding and pie kissed the boys and made them cry
You couldn’t make it up, over responding to a self inflicting idiot…
Why not just 1 fire engine 1 coast guard vehicle and 1 ambulance?
Why do people feel the need to walk through mud? Why don’t they go round it like a normal person?
Always watch you tube videos of how to free yourself from mud, before walking on the stuff.
Make him pay for the costs incurred
3 fire engines and crew for one person? WTF and most of them in the photos are just standing around. Knock it off my Council Tax bill please.
Strewth. Three fire engines/vehicles and an ambulance. Search and rescue vans, a couple of them. Relief fire engines no doubt ferried from the mainland. Probably an ‘incident commander’. Twenty-odd personnel.. No helicopters in the picture. Probably several of them in a field nearby. All for a chap stuck in the mud.
It’s always gratifying to see humans rushing to the aid of other humans. It’s in our nature. But this is a tad over the top don’t you think? It corresponds with the tad over the top size of my council tax bill.
What a waste of Emergency services time.
The time waster should be made to pay the costs.
This is a prime example of how money can be saved 1 coast guard team could have got him out and have 1 medic car on standby this happens time and time again yet nothing is ever done about it.
That’s it…keep wasting money so next year we have to pay more and more in council tax.
What an absolute joke sending all those services, just a blatant waste of money.Just a good job they weren’t needed else where in a proper emergency!!!
Maybe 3 men and a rope, space blanket, and a biscuit
Caulkheads know where it is unsafe to venture. I can only assume that the constant trickle of people getting stuck all around the island are overners. Common sense should prevail also, if the ground you are walking on gets tricky, you turn around or move to a safer area.
